Karen L. Herbst, Ph.D., M.D.

Dr. Herbst is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University
of California, San Diego. She is a Board-certified Physician and Endocrinologist and works as a clinician within the San Diego
VA Medical Center, UCSD Thornton Hospital, and UCSD Medical Center. Dr. Herbst received her medical degree from Rush University, Chicago, IL, and completed her fellowship training in Endocrinology at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA.

Dr. Herbst's research centers on the treatment of Dercum's disease (Adiposis Dolorosa), Madelung's disease, familial multiple lipomatosis, testosterone deficiency, and
hypogonadism. Her current research focuses on the use of a high altitude simulator,
the Cyclic Variations in Altitude Conditioning (CVAC) process in treating diabetes and its
complications and Dercum's disease. She has received research funding from the NIH, NIDDK, NICHD, Auxilium, GSK and CVAC, Inc.
